Ernst van Bemmelen van Gent graduated in law at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). He received a cum-laude post-graduate degree (LL.M.) from the University of Dresden (Germany).

 

As attorney-at-law (Dutch: advocaat) Ernst is admitted to the Bar in The Hague and owner of his own (part-time) law firm. In the past, he was also admitted to the Bar of the Common Court of Justice of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, while practicing law on St. Maarten. Ernst acted as an expert witness in the courts of Florida (U.S.A.).

 

Prior to becoming an attorney, Ernst served as assistant to Professor Peter Hay in Dresden. Currently, he holds a position as lecturer of Utrecht University, Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, as well as a position as part time lecturer of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Dutch Law Program (HBO-Rechten). Previously, he acted as initiator, designer, program manager, and lecturer of The Hague University’s International Bachelor of Law Program and as course manager of the Master of Arts in European Law and Policy, a combined degree with the University of Portsmouth (UK). The research outcome around these projects is published and presented at national and international conferences, as well as in the Bynkershoek Institute. Between 2014 and 2016 he participated in the research center Good Governance of The Hague University. Since 2016 Ernst works on his doctorate degree at Maastricht University. The leading question of his thesis is "what is a good jurist in 2033". In 2018 he was elected as Lecturer of the Year by the students of Utrecht Law School.

 

In 2020, Ernst has been appointed "assistant professor education" (in Dutch: "Universitair Docent Onderwijs"), a new role within the faculty, geared towards the development and application of innovative teaching and learning in the Utrecht Law School. In that capacity, he is active in the Dutch language master program "IP Law, Innovation and Technology", the English language master program "Law and Technology in Europe". As "assistant professor education" he is a member of the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law, the Department International and European Law, and the Legal Skills Academy of Utrecht Law School. One of the innovative projects Ernst is involved with, consist of a Simulation Game, designed to give third-year bachelor students of the honors Utrecht Law College insight into both substantive issues around technological innovation & law, as well as hands-on experience in executing a professional role as a jurist.

 

The professional experience of Ernst comprises all fields of law relevant for businesses and governments that have to deal with enterprises. He served as local counsel for various well-known brand names as ABN Amro Bank, RBTT Bank, Shell, American Airlines, Burger King, Subway, and Heineken. Furthermore, Ernst developed a special interest in areas of governmental regulation of markets and corresponding compliance, as well as the influence of fundamental or human rights on the operation of businesses and the effects of this influence on stakeholders as employees, consumers, developing states, and supranational organizations.

 

Ernst van Bemmelen van Gent is active in civil society and board member and volunteer in various organizations through which he furthers his interests in research, publishing, academic “Bildung”, culture and politics.
